After 23 Years, One Piece Author Oda Finally Reveals Blackbeard’s True Goal

Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is a major character in the One Piece series. Having been referenced all the way back in Drum Island, few fans thought he’d be as big as he ended up becoming as the story progressed. He made his first official appearance in the series during the Jaya Arc, which was 23 years ago. Blackbeard’s importance has only been growing since, and the final saga has revealed a ton of major lore about him and his special Davy bloodline.

In Egghead, fans got to learn about his true goal and motivation of wanting to become the King of the World. Recently, in Elbaf’s Loki flashback, specifically the God Valley Incident, Oda went on to elaborate on it. Blackbeard’s ancestor, Davy D. Jones, was revealed to be the previous King of the World before Imu. The pieces are starting to fall into place, and Blackbeard’s entire purpose is clearer than ever before. Blackbeard, alongside Luffy and Shanks, will be central to the Final Saga.

Blackbeard Wants To Dethrone Imu And Become King

  • Blackbeard carries Rocks D. Xebec’s will

For quite a long time, Blackbeard has been built up to be a major antagonist for Luffy to face at the end of One Piece. Even though Imu exists in One Piece as one of the final antagonists of the story, numerous fans still believe that he will be the final challenge for Monkey D. Luffy in the Final Saga.

For the vast majority of the series, fans had more questions than answers concerning Teach. Oda kept Blackbeard a big mystery, and readers had no idea about his motivation, background, or true nature.

But now, with the Final Saga, Oda has finally started revealing everything about Teach, from his special lineage to his true goal. In the Egghead arc, specifically in One Piece chapter 1107, Saint Saturn asked Laffite and Devon what the Blackbeard Pirates are really after, and their answer is quite straightforward, “The World.”

What they really meant by this is amply more clear when one takes into consideration the event of God Valley during Elbaf. Indeed, Rocks D. Xebec goes on to reveal the truth about his and Blackbeard’s ancestor, Davy D. Jones. Jones was the King of the World during the Void Century, but he was usurped by Imu. Xebec also referred to Imu as “the World,” and in other words, Blackbeard’s real goal is to take down Imu and reclaim the throne from him.

Blackbeard Will Fulfill the Will of Davy

Blackbeard has a huge role to play in One Piece’s Final Saga, regardless of whether he is the final antagonist or not. He has to accomplish what Jones and Xebec failed to do, and in turn, fulfill the Will of Davy.

Xebec had plans to overthrow the World Government and defeat Imu, but unfortunate circumstances surrounding his family meant that he had to face Imu when he wasn’t ready. Blackbeard, however, is already ahead of his father in that regard as he already has one of the Devil Fruits needed to defeat Imu, the Yami Yami no Mi, in his possession. Blackbeard, together with Luffy, will be able to succeed where the likes of Davy D. Jones, Joy Boy, and Xebec failed.
